The biggest difference is the security model: Commentable encrypts the file in the browser, the key sits in the link, the server only sees ciphertext. Annopane relies on EU hosting, passwords, roles and offline use – and opens PDF, Excel, Word and PowerPoint alongside HTML.
When Commentable is the better choice
- End-to-end encryption is mandatory for you: the provider must be technically unable to read the content.
- You need an audit function with names per view and company-only links (Business plan).
- You want your own logo on the shared page – free on Commentable.
When Annopane is the better choice
- Besides HTML you share PDFs, spreadsheets, Word and PowerPoint files – with the same commenting mechanism.
- Recipients should have the file as an app on their phone and open it offline too.
- You want a library with folders, roles per person and a company workspace everyone joins automatically.
- You want unlimited files for free (beta) and data in the EU.

The encryption argument – taken seriously
Commentable's model is elegant: because the key only lives in the link, the provider can't read the content – not even on request. If you work with very sensitive content and don't want to trust the provider, that's a strong argument. Annopane takes the classic path: data lives encrypted in the EU, access via password and roles, the provider could technically access it but doesn't. For most companies that is the familiar standard – for some purposes end-to-end is the right answer.
Why Annopane's breadth matters
In practice a review rarely consists of HTML alone. The report comes as HTML, the numbers as Excel, the minutes as PDF. Annopane puts them in one folder, shares the folder once and collects comments in all three files with the same mechanism. Then there's the phone: the file sits as an app on the home screen and opens even without reception.
Our verdict
If you need end-to-end encryption or your own logo on the free plan, Commentable is the right choice. If you share mixed formats, want folders with roles, a company workspace and the app feel on the phone, Annopane fits better. On the core topic – commentable HTML links with a way back to the AI – both are on par.
Try Annopane for freeFrequently asked questions
Can Google find Annopane links?
No. Shared, published and guest pages carry “noindex”, and links consist of random characters. You can additionally set a password.
Does Annopane see my files?
Technically the files sit encrypted in a database in the EU. There is no tracking and no analysis of content. If you need a solution where the provider technically cannot access anything, Commentable's end-to-end model serves you better.
