Share a dashboard on mobile – no BI license for the recipient

The dashboard is done – in Plotly, Quarto, Jupyter, a Streamlit export, Power BI or directly in Claude. Now management should see it on their phones, in the taxi, right before the meeting. The hurdles: licenses, VPN, logins, and in the end a PDF after all.

In short

Export the dashboard as standalone HTML (Plotly: write_html with include_plotlyjs=True; Quarto: embed-resources; Power BI: export via web page/HTML visuals or Claude as an intermediate step), drop it on annopane.com, share the link with a password. Recipients open it without a license and without an account, offline too, as an app.

The path that works: export as a standalone HTML file and distribute via Annopane link. Filters stay, tooltips stay, and whoever questions a number comments right there.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Plotly / Python

fig.write_html("report.html", include_plotlyjs=True, full_html=True) – the file contains everything and runs offline. Several charts: one HTML template with multiple figures, or let Claude build it.

  2. 2

    Quarto / R Markdown / Jupyter

Quarto: format html with embed-resources: true. R Markdown: self_contained: true. Jupyter: nbconvert --to html --embed-images. Result: one file Annopane opens directly.

  3. 3

    Power BI / Tableau

Neither exports natively as interactive HTML. Practical: export data as Excel/CSV and let Claude build an HTML dashboard (“build an interactive dashboard from this table as a single HTML file”). Or share the Excel file directly in Annopane – cells are commentable there.

  4. 4

    Distribute

Drop the file (or a folder with several reports) into Annopane, create a link with password and “Commenter” role, send via email or Teams. Recipients: “Add to Home Screen” – the dashboard is now an app. New monthly version: upload, same link.

Why not the BI app or a PDF?

BI apps need licenses and logins per viewer and often a VPN – a project for ten board members. PDFs are instant but rigid: no filters, no tooltips, just zooming on the phone. An HTML export via Annopane link is the middle path: as simple as a PDF, as alive as the dashboard – and feedback lands at the spot instead of in emails.

Confidentiality

Numbers for management are confidential. Hence: link with password and expiry, data in the EU, links not indexed, views visible (“did the investor open it?”). Companies get a workspace that all colleagues with a company email join automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How large can the dashboard be?

Up to 50 MB per file with an account. A Plotly dashboard with embedded plotly.js is typically 3–5 MB.

Do Plotly tooltips and filters work on the phone?

Yes, fully – Annopane runs the file's JavaScript. Plotly's touch gestures work as in the browser.

Can I connect live data?

External network calls are blocked by default (security, offline). You can allow network access per file; for monthly reports we recommend embedding the data and uploading a new version under the same link.
